New Publication!
In November 2025, a new co-authored article by Nicole Dalmer, together with Stephen Katz, Barbara L. Marshall, and Kate L. Ellison, was published. The paper, titled “Connections, negotiations, and tensions: Talking tech with older adults,” explores how older adults describe and interpret the technologies that shape their everyday lives.
Drawing on conversations with older adults, the article examines how people talk about their interactions with technology—what feels supportive, what feels challenging, and what lies in between. The study shows that these experiences involve ongoing negotiation, adaptation, and emotional complexity, moving beyond simple ideas of being “tech savvy” or “tech resistant.”
Participants shared diverse perspectives. These narratives illustrate how relationships with technology intertwine with identity, communication, care, and social belonging in later life.
By highlighting the negotiations, tensions, and emotions that shape technology use, the article challenges assumptions about older adults’ digital engagement and underscores the importance of contextual, relational, and experience-based perspectives.
